How Do You Make Homemade Puffy Paint with Shaving Cream?
When I learned how to make homemade puff paint, I was astounded at just how easy it was to make! You only need two ingredients (or three if you want different colors), and the results are amazing! So today I’m going to show you how to make the best homemade puffy paint recipe!
I know that when my kids are bored and you don’t want to stick them in front of the TV again, here is an easy and frugal way to keep them entertained! This is a perfect rainy day activity that is a lot of fun! This is personally my and my kids’ favorite homemade paint recipe because you only need two ingredients with an optional 3rd for color. Plus when it dries, you get a fun texture that gives you three-dimensional paint! This is an inexpensive activity where you can use the puff paint in different ways and they will love the feeling of it when it dries!
Puffy Paint Ingredients For This Simple Recipe:
– shaving cream,
– cup of glue
– food coloring (optional)
– small bowls
– paint brushes for stirring and painting (optional: use cotton swabs or a popsicle stick to stir and paint)
How do you make simple diy puffy paint recipe with glue and shaving cream?
- All you need to make your homemade puffy paint is to mix shaving cream and glue. I recommend a 1:1 ratio of shaving cream and glue – but it doesn’t need to be perfectly 1:1. For example, mix one cup of glue with one cup of shaving cream.
2. If you want to make 4 different colors of your own paint, then I recommend using splitting the shaving cream into 4 paper bowls (you can also use a paper plate). Then split up one bottle of liquid white glue between the 4 bowls so that each of the bowls gets a quarter of the bottle.
3. In each bowl, stir until the shaving cream and glue are mixed well.
4. If you want some color, then go ahead and add just a little bit (drop or 2) of food colouring to the bowl and stir until the color is smooth.
Once you have your colored homemade puffy paint (sometimes called shaving cream paint), grab a piece of paper and let the artwork begin!
What is this puffy paint used for?
I’ve seen a variety of ways you can use your own homemade puffy paint. When my daughter was in pre-school, she made a “melted snowman” with plain white puffy paint. They added the parts of the snowman on top of the white puffy paint “melted snow.” I’ve seen kids make rainbows, ice cream cones, clouds, butterflies, the earth, and so much more! You can mix in glitter or add additional glitter to the top of your creation. If you want to make thinner lines with it, you could add it to a pastry bag and squeeze the bag to add more detail to your piece of art. If you don’t have a pastry bag, you can add the paint mixture to ziplock bags and snip the corner of the bag with scissors and squeeze it out that small hole.
Another thing you could experiment with that I have not yet is adding a drop or two of essential oil that your child loves to make this more enjoyable on the senses!
My kids have used it to represent water, grass, or the sun when they were making ecosystem dioramas for school. If nothing else, it’s fun to just put it on paper! I recommend using card stock, or black paper to bring out the color.
You will want to wait a few hours, or even until the next day to let this fully dry so that you can touch it and it will be soft and puffy! If you want to make your puffy paint dry faster, you can place it in the sun, or in a heated and dry room to help speed up the drying time.
