Make Ahead Freezer Meals – Burritos using FREE Veggies from Wegmans!
My husband recently came up with a great idea for an easier, cheaper, an good tasting solution for his lunches at work.
I’m not a cool enough wife to pack him a lunch (I’m usually blogging when he heads out the door), he doesn’t get dinner leftovers every day, and canned soup gets old after awhile.
After looking at our “eating out” budget, we saw that he was hitting up Taco Bell and Burger King just a bit too much.
So during his week off during Christmas, he decided to tackle a make ahead freezer meal in the form of burritos – and take those for his lunches!
He was in and out of the kitchen for a day making up 30 burritos. Here are the ingredients he used:
– (30) 10″ wraps – Wegmans brand
– (2) 16 oz sour cream (1 tbsp. ea) – Wegmans brand
– 12 lb chicken drums or other meat = 1/4 lb for each burrito
– (9) – 8 oz bags frozen peppers/onions (which were FREE because I had a bunch already in the freezer from the Recipe Ready $0.75/1 coupon that I ordered from CouponDede! You can still order these – they don’t expire until 2/1/14!)
– (5) 8-oz bag cheese = 1/6 bag/ea – Wegmans brand
– (3) sm cans mushrooms – Wegmans brand
-(5) cans of Old El Paso re-fried beans (there is a $0.60 off THREE Old El Paso products coupon you can use)
– hot pepper rings
– cholua hot sauce
– aluminum foil – Wegmans brand
Total Spent on the Wegmans Receipt = $43.10 (only purchased 3.5 lbs meat – the rest of the meat, beef and pork, was given to us)
PLUS of course, the veggies were free. 🙂
**Funny side note – he actually called me from Wegmans on his burrito ingredient shopping journey to ask me what frozen veggies we had on hand. He didn’t even know about the stockpile of Early Bird Recipe Ready peppers, onions, and tomatoes I already had stocked up on. I totally would have freaked out if he came home having bought them! He was shocked and thrilled when I told him what was in the freezer!
If Glenn ate at Taco Bell for 30 days:
On average he spends $2.77 for 2 burritos..Multiply that for 30 days = $83.10. That means he about cut his lunch food expenses in half! PLUS, he’s gettiing WAY better quality (actual 100% meat!) and better tasting food!
By the way, no, he won’t eat these everyday for a month. He’ll still take canned soup, dinner left overs, and will probably still occasionally hit up Taco Bell. But it does alleviate a lot of stress in his mornings when he can open up the freezer, see the stack below, grab and go!
FYI, I had nothing to do with this cooking endeavor – nothing! My goal with cooking is to make the cheapest, fastest meals possible that actually still taste good. The thought of being in the kitchen cooking all day makes me exhausted just thinking about it! I’ll spend all day crafting, but not cooking!
My friend Robin over at Neat Nest Organizing swears by make ahead freezer meals (you can find many more ideas and recipes over there!). Glenn is all about efficiency and if he was in charge of our meals, I know he would want to have our freezer full of make ahead freezer meals! But it’s just not in me. *Sigh*…I guess I’ll have to wait until next Christmas to get more stocked up in our freezer. 🙂
