Frugal Decor: Baby’s First Christmas Footprint Ornament DIY

When I put up and decorated our Christmas tree this year, I discovered a ridiculous amount of “baby’s first Christmas” ornaments for my oldest daughter.  12 of them to be exact!!

Yes I am guilty of buying some of them, but my mother probably purchased the most.  I know I have other relatives that pitched in on the stash as well.

Of course now that baby #2 is here, I counted up her “stash” of “baby’s first Christmas” ornaments.  She has….2.

I guess I should be proud of myself that she has any at all!  But I was feeling that mom guilt that baby #2 gets left out, So I set out on a crafting task to try and help even out the numbers a bit!

Here are the supplies I used to make this baby’s first Christmas footprint ornament:

• Felt
• Glue
• Glitter or colored sand (or “nail cavier” – which is terrible to use on nails by the way, which is why I used it for this project.)
• Scissors
• Puffy Paint or Liquid Lead
• Tulle
• Needle/thread
• Glue gun

If you have a 4 year old, I guarantee you will make his/her day by letting them squeeze a bunch of glue on a plate, mix it around, and make hand-prints out of it!  It was way easier for me to get pictures of the process using my oldest and her hand, rather than the baby and her foot.  But yes, I did really get a baby foot print by dipping her cute little baby foot in the glue, and printing it on the felt.

 I poured the colored “nail cavier” over the glue print.  I’m sure glitter or colored sand would work just as well, if not better.

For the frilly edge, I just folded and cut, 2 different colors of tulle, into about 1 inch strips.  I did a gathering stitch with needle and thread with the tulle strips.  I hot-glued that around the edge as the border.

When I got the baby foot print, I wasn’t happy that the details of her toes blended in together too much.  So then I decided to photocopy her newborn footprint that we got to from the hospital.  This is her newborn print on top of her 6 month old outline.  I thought that was cool because then I could see the growth that occurred over the past 6 months as well.

I added her name and year on the back for reference.  I used liquid lead because I had some on hand.  Puffy paint would work just as well.

And there is the final baby’s first Christmas footprint ornament!  No, it doesn’t equal the 9 more that her sister has, but it’s large and frilly, and sure is cute!
