Today I’m going to show you how to make this easy DIY striped washi tape frame! I’m always looking for washi tape ideas because I have so much of it and it holds so much potential to make something look better!
Feel free to use different colors for holidays or to match home decor with this washi tape idea! These make great personalized gifts and can add a pop of color to any room!
Supplies needed for striped washi tape frame tutorial:
- White photo frame – flat in front and sides – 4×6” used for this project. You can get one at Walmart or Amazon
- Washi tape – this is the set I used for this project. (It looks like they send out a variety of prints, and ordering will not give you the identical patterns seen in these images.
- Scissors
- Clear sealer or clear nail polish
Directions for Washi Tape Wall Art:
- Remove the back of the frame, as well as the glass and paper insert.
2. Unroll a small amount of washi tape, and center it diagonally on one corner of the frame, about ½ inch in. Gently adhere the tape to the front, and the sides of the frame, then wrap around to the back of the frame.
3. When choosing colors, pick washi tape custom for the event, holiday, room colors, or personal preference. While blue and silver are my favorite colors, the variety of colors that can be used for this washi tape art is infinite!
4. Use the scissors to cut the tape at the edge of the back of the frame.
5. For the second strip of tape, unroll a decent amount of tape, then carefully place it about ½ inch under the other piece, on both the top and right sides of the frame.
6. Use the scissors to cut the tape right in the center. Then wrap each of the sides like you did in the previous step. For the piece that is wrapped to the front, you will want to wrap that piece up inside the frame too, so that you can see the tape in the front sides too. (See finished photos)
7. Continue this process until you have wrapped tape across the entire frame.
How do you seal washi tape?
You have three options when you are done adding tape to your frame. The first option is to leave it as is without sealing it. Your tape was very sticky, then this could work.
I on the other hand have cheap washi tape from china that doesn’t always stay stuck. So I chose to use clear nailpolish on the back to hold down the ends of the tape.
A third option is to spray the entire frame with clear sealer.
Other uses for washi tape:
- Use it to decorate this upcycled tin lunch box note and treat holder
- Use it to decorate cards out of homemade paper
- Turn ugly cookie tins into an adorable re-usable gift box!
- Here are 20+ more ideas!
Hopefully you’ll give this project a try! These make for a very frugal personalized gift idea! You can add a photo or a simple pattern like the one pictured above.
Check out some printable quotes I have in my store! You just need an 8×10 white frame instead to embellish with washi tape stripes!
