Grade 4-8 Nature Scavenger Hunt + Additional Activities!

As a former middle school science and high school biology teacher, I’m thrilled to offer this resource during this new age of “I’m a homeschool mom and clueless on what to do for fun science activities for my kids!” 

(Hopefully your teachers are helping with this.  But if you need an additional resource, especially one that gets your kids (or possibly the whole family outside), then this is a great science activity for your kids.

If you received and printed your copy of this nature scavenger hunt geared toward 4-8 graders, then here are some additional activities you can do after your hunt!

You may need additional resources (like Alexa or Google) to complete these activities – but as long as you have the internet, you can search and find these answers.  Be sure to get your parent’s permission before using the internet for this purpose!

• Write 3 differences between deciduous and coniferous trees.
• If you found a fossil, find out what kind of fossil it is.
• Look at pond water under a microscope and draw what you see.
• Identify the flower you found and find 5 more plants you can learn to identify (my personal favorite for identifying wildflowers is Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide).
• What is the difference between an insect and an arachnid?
• What is the difference between a worm and an insect?
• Find 3 editable plants (and don’t eat them without parental permission).
• Find a seed with a distinct method of dispersal.  Why do you think it has adapted to travel from its “mother plant?”
• Be sure you looked up anything you needed to in the “additional research needed” section of the scavenger hunt and record what they are if you didn’t already know.
• Did you find something unique that you want to identify?  Go ahead and identify it now!  Alexa and Google are sure to help!
• Write a few sentences on what you learned today, that you didn’t know about nature before doing this scavenger hunt.
