Homemade Soap with Essential Oils – Lavender, Geranium, and Patchouli Scented

Homemade Soap with Essential Oils – Lavender, Geranium, and Patchouli Scented

Are you looking for some unique and useful DIY gift ideas?  Then you should give homemade soap with essential oils a try!!  If there is one thing I truly enjoy, it is making my own homemade items, like this melt and pour soap recipe.  This is not a cold press soap making recipe, and no lye is needed.  You just need a pre-made soap base, and you can customize the color and scents – but by adding a few ingredients and essential oils.

This is one homemade gift idea that is easy and is guaranteed to be loved by its recipient.  This soap is so pretty and when using lavender, geranium, and patchouli essential oil, it smells absolutely amazing.  If you’ve never tried any easy melt and pour soap recipes, then this is the perfect one to start with.

Melt and pour soap is a great option for beginners and this surprisingly takes very little time and effort to make.  I was shocked the first time I tried this that I really could create 12 bars in under an hour!  Friends, neighbors, and teachers will just adore this homemade gift!

Homemade Soap with Essential Oils - melting the soap

Creating Your Homemade Lavender Soap:

  1.  The large block of the soap base is smooth and silky, and it cuts easily with a kitchen knife.  First, slice the soap base into strips, then cubes, and place them inside the microwave safe measuring cup.
  2. Next, melt in the microwave in 30-second increments, stirring well in between to ensure that the soap is completely melted. It took three 30 second heatings for each batch to 100% melt. My pyrex measuring cup was only big enough to melt half of the soap at one time, so I ended up making 2 batches out of the 2 lbs of soap base.

3. Once the soap is completely melted, add 15 drops each of lavender, patchouli, and geranium essential oils. You can add more if you want a stronger scent.

Benefits of each essential oil – I use the Quick Reference Guide for Using Essential Oils to get information on how each oil can benefit our skin as we put it in our soap.  After looking up these benefits, I’m learning that this is a great combination to use on your face!

Lavender Essential Oil – is a calming scent that promotes peace and a sense of well being.  It also great for your skin for any rashes or burns.

Geranium Essential Oil – may help keep skin supple by balancing the sebum secreted from sebaceous glands (great for acne prone skin.)

Patchouli Essential Oil – helps with skin conditions such as chapped or tightens loose skin.  It also protects against UV rays and prevents wrinkles, making this a great soap to use on your face as well!

The combination of the three of these, in my opinion, is my new favorite scent blend.  It has such a light and flowery scent, that just puts me in a good mood.  If you’ve never tried this combination, I encourage you to try it as it truly is aromatherapy and enhances the feeling of well-being!  All three of these can help calm you, and just put you in a lighter mood while using this soap!  Not to mention the benefits for your skin listed above!

Homemade Soap with Essential Oils -adding jojoba beads

4.  After you have added and mixed in your essential oils, add 1 tablespoon of purple jojoba beads for some color and texture.

5.  Be careful with the jojoba beads when adding them to your soap.  You don’t want your soap too hot – over 160º, or your beads could melt or float to the top.  I’ve never had that happen to me, but have had readers tell me and send me pictures asking why that happened.  I recommend heating up the soap in 30-second increments in the microwave.  As soon as the soap is melted, pull it out.  You want it just melted and not any hotter, or it may melt the jojoba beads.

Homemade Soap with Essential Oils - pour into the mold

6. Once all of that is stirred well, pour it into the soap mold and let sit for at least 45 to an hour minutes to cool.  The 2 lbs of soap exactly fit to make 12 bars using this mold. If you don’t want any bubbles on the bottom of your soap, then give your melted soap a quick spritz of 50:50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water, and the bubbles will pop so that you have a smooth bottom.

7.  Once your soap cools, you can pop it out of the mold.  If these are for a homemade gift idea, then decorate them with burlap ribbon, purple raffia, or the soap labels I have provided for you!  (see below to get them in your inbox so you can print them out and wrap them around your bars of soap.)
