opinions are my own.
I live in in the fingerlake region of upstate NY. One of my most favorite times of the year is the peak of fall when the leaves change color. I love the crispness in the air that comes with the colorful foliage. I also just love that this weather means the holiday season has arrived!
With every season change, also comes some sort of rotation in my kids closets. I’ve officially put the sandals, shorts, and t-shirts either in a donation box, or packed away for the winter. But part of me gets really bothered each year when my fast growing kids have an adorable summer outfit that they only wore a few times before the season changes and it’s time to pack it away or give it away.
See this cute outfit here that my 3 year old is wearing? She just got that in September! I’m not ready to kiss it goodbye yet since she will more than likely have outgrown it when it gets warm again here in upstate NY. So now that fall is here, and the holidays have arrived, do I really need to just put it in the donation box before my daughter has gotten full use out of it?
The answer is NO! What I’ve done is to learn the strategies of layering in kids fashion and adding something more to the outfit, so that my daughter can continue to wear it during every season, until she has officially outgrown it.
I went to OshKosh B’Gosh to solve my problem and got an adorable denim button up shirt that is very versatile for layering on many spring/summer outfits. I also grabbed a cute pair of boots! So what was once a 2 month long wearing season outfit, will now last all winter long for my 3 year old!
You can’t see in the picture, but their leggings have gold glitter in them too, which is a fun sparkly addition that the girls just love! Glitter is everyone’s new favorite “color” this season – which is also just perfect during the holidays! I just love that OshKosh kid!
My 7 year old wore this outfit the first day of school this year. But now that snow is about to fall any day now, she can’t go to school sock free in a short sleeve shirt. I’m not ready to put this in the hand-me-down box just yet as she still has many more months she can wear it until she grows out of it.
The solution? Grab a darker pair of tights for the winter season, a cardigan sweater, and a pair of boots! Now we have an outfit that will last through April here in upstate NY.
If you are trying to maximize the time your kids wear their clothing throughout the seasons, then don’t forget this tip! One new layering shirt/sweater plus a new seasonal pair of shoes can easily extend the life of an outfit throughout many seasons!

In case you think I’m some sort of wonder women mom blogger who has perfect kids who pose perfectly for these photo shoots – guess again. If any of you have tried photographing a 3 year old – I’m sure you can relate. My 7 year old had just way too many opinions and liked to argue with me on different poses.
The rest of these “outtakes” is more what the majority of these pictures looked like 😉
“Mom – I fell and got mud on my leggings.” Thank the good Lord this happened at the end of this photo shoot!
